People's Union demands action against Velammal School

CHENNAI: The People's Union for Civil Liberties of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, has called for stringent action against the management of Velammal School and the teachers responsible for the incident which led to Abhinav's death and for the beating of other students in their fact finding report on the suicide and conditions in the school.

In addition to paying suitable compensation to Ramu's family, the report also calls for investigations into the suicide of Thoufeeq, a student of the same school, in December 2001.
According to V Geetha, an activist and PUCL member, the objectives of the fact-finding committee was to determine if Ramu's death was caused by any external factors 'besides bringing into light the conditions in the Velammal Matriculation School'. "Our enquiries have shown that Ramu's death was not due to family problems or any external causes but the school was solely responsible for it," she said.

The report also recommends that the 'academicians and educationists be involved in the management of schools and this be made a pre-requisite for licensing schools and their renewals'.

"The Velammal Trust has chosen to appoint family members as Chairman, Director, Correspondent and Secretary and this has contributed to the general lack of professionalism and understanding in the school management."

"The Correspondent and the higher management, instead of checking the teachers and preventing abusive practices, have themselves engaged in corporal punishment of students," she added.

"The Management places extreme pressure on the teachers to bring out good results, and the teachers in turn use all forms of pressure, including torture," said Sheelu of the Tamil Nadu Women's Collective and a member of the fact finding team. "The very structure of the school involves violence against students. Punishment is so frequent that it has essentially become a form of torture," she added. Members of the fact finding team told the Press that the chairman of the Velammal Matriculation School declined to meet them after having given them an appointment. "We waited for over an hour and left," said T S S Mani a PUCL member.

The team members also emphasised that the aim of the report was to bring about a change in the education system as a whole. "We are not targeting Velammal alone since we know corporal punishment exists in most schools. We want to see a long-term effort at reforming the system to ensure that it is learning oriented rather than performance oriented," said Geetha.
The team compiled the report after meeting present and former students from Velammal Matriculation School and their parents and those of Ramu and Thoufeeq, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anna Nagar, who is investigating the case and Dr. C Manohar the postmortem examiner.

The report has been submitted to the Education Minister, the United Nation High Commission for Human Rights, the State and the National Human Rights Commissions and the Directorate of School Education. This should be publicised in the streets where the school is,so that the parents 'll be aware of these attrocities. The school speaks of perfection. But the students are made to sit on floor for lack space during
class tests, clean toilets are not provided etc.,The students are treated like criminals. It is functioning worse than a jouveniele school(seerthirutha palli). You can ask for confidential comment from the parents, you 'll get more news.
The parents are affraid of getting
admission in other schools if their ward is dismissed due to this ....

This is the most horrible school i have ever seen in Chennai. They want 100% pass rate and even prevent less able students from public exams. The management is horror and the chairman's family is very sadist. They torture the students like criminals bt they perform all criminal acts behind the scene.

Please stop talking nonsence without knowing the truth. I was a successful student passed out from Velammal, working in a MNC, only because of the hopes given by our Chairman. He is the best i have seen in this world. He is the very best hardworker i have seen in this world. He rightly adviced me in a tough situvation when i was about to discontinue my studies. Please know the truth before you utter anything.

The Narrator is writing as if he were witnessing the incident that had happened in front of him. If that is truth, then let him tell how exactly the death had happened.

first of all writing stories of this sort is only saddistic and unmeaningful.
the bloggers and the world should know that velammal is one of the largest schools in this part of india having nearly 40000 students from kg to pg .
all the students are very succesful and part of the whole world working in leading companies.
thousands of parents are waiting to join their children in the schools run by this trust.
many students have benifiteed because of this school.
it is unfair for the bloggers to write without knowing the facts and figures.

even if their narration is good what was the truth ?
both were cases well enquired for hundreds of hours

bur only truth won.
the school came out with clean chit.
politicians drama and trying to take mileage of the situation will not work if the facts and figures are not true
atleast now try to understand the truth

I used to be a student of the same school and i am now a student in New Zealand and compared to the treatment of students in this country and others schools in chennai, velammal was one of the most irresponsible if not the most irresponsible school. During breaks students would not be allowed to run even on the fields probably because of the lack of space. I have also been beaten a few times by the HOD of during 2003-2005 even though i did not deserve it. I am thankful that they were strict and helped me learn a lot of things during my time at the school but i think they always went overboard and were more cruel than strict

As a parent we did not admit our kids in Velammal to receive corporal punishments. It is heartening to hear my kid refusing to go to school as the treatment metted out is discouraging. Strictness has it's limits, and need not always end with punishments. Dusters, rulers etc are used effectively as tools against students for punishing. That too in primary classes.

Class teachers taking long leaves and no proper substitute is causing chaos in young minds. Teachers in Velammal Vidyalaya sometimes refuses to allow students to attend natures calls. It is inhuman. 50-60 students per classroom and 10 sections per standard. How can they share couple of toilets per floor.
